The Italian anthem was the last to play at the European mountain bike championships, which ended today in Anadia, Portugal. Responsibility of Simone Avondetto, who won the men’s Olympic cross country (XCO) title in the under-23 category.

The seven-lap race had four riders standing out early on: Simone Avondetto, Charlie Aldridge (Great Britain), Janis Baumann (Switzerland) and David Campos (Spain). The quartet would not stay together for long. On lap three Simone Avondetto pulled away and stayed in command until the end of the race.

With Spain’s David Campos taking off, Aldridge and Baumann kept up a fierce fight for the silver medal. In the end, Simone Avondetto won comfortably. Charlie Aldridge was 10 seconds behind him and took the runner-up spot. Third at 21 seconds was Janis Baumann.

With the end of the European Mountain Bike Championships, all eyes are now turned to the European Road Championships, which Anadia will host from 7 to 10 July.
